PROBLEM STATEMENTS

SPECIAL OLYMPICS SASKATCHEWAN

1) We lack an easy to use online donation/donor management system (which might include a way for donors to make donations)

2) At Special Olympics Saskatchewan, we’re lacking a user-friendly way for athletes to record their training so that coaches/parents can keep updated on athletes’ training, as well as a user-friendly way for athletes to monitor their nutrition and receive help regarding what are healthy food choices

3) Internally, we lack an application for staff to record their hours worked, including vacation, sick time, overtime, etc.

REGINA FOOD BANK

1) Over the last number of years Regina Food Bank has expanded its programming to include collection of not just non-perishable food items, but also fresh produce from several vendors in our community. The tremendous upside of this is that we are able to provide a more nutritious food hamper to our clients.  The challenge however is sometimes the type of product we receive is unknown to our clients and preparation can be difficult if they have never be used before. Being able to help educate our clients to make nutritious meals with the great ingredients inside their hampers would help us to continue to fight hunger and feed hope.

UNITED WAY REGINA

1) Edible food is often thrown away (by restaurants, stores, etc.) simply because of a lack of knowledge as to who can utilize it. Technology may be able to help solve this issue. If we are able to connect grocery stores, restaurants, other food service establishments, etc. to shelters, food security agencies, etc., food can reach people - not dumpsters

2) United Way Regina conducts many workshops and events (such as volunteer opportunities, engagement presentations, capacity building workshops) in Regina. We lack a cost-effective way to gather real-time survey data to evaluate those workshops and events using live audience participation - via SMS or other means

3) 211 Saskatchewan has a listing of childcare service providers in its database, but it currently lacks the ability to show in real-time how many childcare spaces are available. If there was a real-time application that showed how many spaces were available, the system could operate with greater efficiency.

FAQS

WILL THE SPECIFIC ISSUES/PROBLEMS TO BE WORKED ON BE ANNOUNCED AHEAD OF TIME?
Yes, the problem statements from our participating organizations will be announced ahead of time - however, all solutions must be fully developed during the course of the event.

CAN MORE THAN ONE TEAM WORK ON THE SAME PROBLEM?
Yes - there will be more teams than there are problem statements, and we know you're a creative bunch who could take these solutions in any number of directions!

DO I NEED A TEAM TO REGISTER?
No, you don't need to be a part of a team to register, but you can easily link up with other participants on this site under the PARTICIPANTS tab. If you don't have a team going in, ensure that you arrive by 5 PM on September 30th for team-forming and official team registration.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

  • Mobile device, if creating a mobile app
  • Cables, charges and connectors for any of the above

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR PROJECTS AFTER QUEEN CITY HACK?
This event is all about creating open source tech solutions for organizations in our nonprofit community. We want to make sure these organizations can actually make use of these solutions, so at the end of the hackathon, we ask that you give a copy to the organization as well as upload it to Github for them to download.

WHAT ARE YOU FEEDING US? WHAT IF I HAVE A FOOD RESTRICTION OR ALLERGY?
We will be providing meals and snacks throughout the event, self-serve style. If you have a food restriction or allergy, please reach out to Karen Lawson and we will accommodate you.

IS THE FACILITY OPEN ALL NIGHT OR DO WE HAVE TO LEAVE AT A CERTAIN HOUR AND COME BACK IN THE MORNING?
Innovation Place will be available all night long, since a 24-hour hackathon is a bit of a time crunch! Participants can leave and come back if they want to, but there will be a quiet room on site for short naps if needed.
