TONIGHT! & Problem Statements
Hello there:
T-6.5 hours until QUEEN CITY <hack> kicks off! Come over to 10 Research Drive at 5 PM for registration and pizza, and we'll get things started at 5:30 with some words from our MC, Bob Breznak.
Remember to come armed with your laptop and phone, chargers, and anything else you need to hack the night away (maybe a pillow and blanket, if you want). We'll provide the food & caffeine!
Here are the problem statements from our three Community Partners. Remember, all of the hacking has to be done during the event! Reps from these organizations will be on hand until 7 PM to answer any questions that you need to get started.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS SASKATCHEWAN
1) We lack an easy to use online donation/donor management system (which might include a way for donors to make donations)
2) At Special Olympics Saskatchewan, we’re lacking a user-friendly way for athletes to record their training so that coaches/parents can keep updated on athletes’ training, as well as a user-friendly way for athletes to monitor their nutrition and receive help regarding what are healthy food choices
3) Internally, we lack an application for staff to record their hours worked, including vacation, sick time, overtime, etc.
REGINA FOOD BANK
1) Over the last number of years Regina Food Bank has expanded its programming to include collection of not just non-perishable food items, but also fresh produce from several vendors in our community. The tremendous upside of this is that we are able to provide a more nutritious food hamper to our clients. The challenge however is sometimes the type of product we receive is unknown to our clients and preparation can be difficult if they have never be used before. Being able to help educate our clients to make nutritious meals with the great ingredients inside their hampers would help us to continue to fight hunger and feed hope.
UNITED WAY REGINA
1) Edible food is often thrown away (by restaurants, stores, etc.) simply because of a lack of knowledge as to who can utilize it. Technology may be able to help solve this issue. If we are able to connect grocery stores, restaurants, other food service establishments, etc. to shelters, food security agencies, etc., food can reach people - not dumpsters
2) United Way Regina conducts many workshops and events (such as volunteer opportunities, engagement presentations, capacity building workshops) in Regina. We lack a cost-effective way to gather real-time survey data to evaluate those workshops and events using live audience participation - via SMS or other means
3) 211 Saskatchewan has a listing of childcare service providers in its database, but it currently lacks the ability to show in real-time how many childcare spaces are available. If there was a real-time application that showed how many spaces were available, the system could operate with greater efficiency.
